Plato and Lockes Views on an Innate Idea Essay -- Philosophy essays

Plato and Lockes Views on an Innate Idea What is an innate idea? This can be defined as some idea or mental representation that is produced by outside perception or created anew by our imagination. It exists in the mind in rectitude of the nature of the human mind. According to Plato most if not all of our experience is innate. However, John Locke feels that we do not have any innate ideas. Then the query arises of who is right or are they both wrong. In this paper I depart attempt to examine the conflicting visions of Plato and Locke. The problem that I will be dealing with involves the different views of Locke and Plato. The main focus of the paper will be to deal with both sides of the view on innate ideas and determine which is plausible. I will be looking particularly at Platos treatment of the concepts in the Meno and Lockes treatment in certain parts of the essay on human understanding. It is very grave to determine what if anything the mind posse sses. It could possess everything we will ever know, as Plato seems to think, or the mind could possess nothing. Both of these views will be discussed in the following paper. Platos view on knowledge stems from Socrates and his teachings. Socrates claimed to not know what virtues were or if they existed. However, he develops a peculiar view of ideas and knowledge acquisition. Meno 70-100b. First, I will begin by set up the background of the Meno. Socrates has been on a quest to find if anyone knows what virtues are and who has the virtues. While in the process of this Socrates makes many enemies. At the beginning of the d... ...the experience at hand. When we learn from this experience it is engraved on our minds or slates. Locke is a model empiricist. But I also feel he should compromise on the get out of innate capacities. This would allow for all the knowledge we gain from experience to be filtered and classified to further our learning. Therefore, w e would have no innate ideas but we would gain our knowledge from experiences. However, we would have the innate capacities to filter our knowledge. Works Cited Brown, M. (1971). human race TV Can you believe that reality television has actually been around since 1948? Most of us may have thought that this vagary of real television just came about in the last decade but actually its been around for quite some time. In 1948 undefended Camera was the first reality show to be broadcasted on television. Many considered this to be the granddaddy of the reality TV genre (History of reality TV). This show actually began in radio air. Allen Funt was the man in charge of this whole new production. He started by simply taping complaints of men in service and broadcasting them over the Armed Forces Radio. This is what later became known as the television show, Candid Camera. Candid Camera was known for catching people in the act of be themselves (History of Reality TV). Funt passed away in 1999 and his son, Peter has now taken over for him to continue these series. So, now you might be asking yourself what show came twenty-five eld after Candid Camera ? The next broadcasted reality television show was An American Family. This show was written about a California family, the Louds. You would probably never believe it but this show captured it all It showed many personal experiences in the loud family such as the parents divorce and lifestyle of their gay son, Lance. An American Family vie an extremely vast role in exposing society to a more diverse and supposedly real representation of family life. Sexually Explicit Advertising is Detrimental to Society Essay -- Argum

Sexually Explicit Advertising is Detrimental to SocietyJust how far should advertisers go to sell a product? Individuals are reminded that a new age in advertising has emerged when Britney Spears and Victorias Secret model Tricia Helfer grace the cover of Forbes, a traditionally mature financial magazine. However, as any life-threatening advertiser knows, sex sells all people need to do is look at a newsstand or magazine rack. But while it sells, it also offends as the promiscuous use of sexual images in advertising rubs many consumers the wrong way. The current increase of sexually explicit advertising, while increasing sales, has many prejudicious effects on society. New regulations or other forms of control need to be implemented to protect children and others who are defenseless against the war to win consumers. fit to a nationwide poll conducted for Adweek by Alden & Associates of Hermosa Beach, CA, people were asked whether they thought there is too much sexual imagery in ad vertising. A landslide of 73% said there is, with respondents in the 35-49 ag e bracket more likely to say so as concerned parents (Dolliver, 1). There is a scramble among advertisers on whether to use the sure way to sell the product (through sexual images) or to be true to a sense of morality. More often than not, esurience takes o ver and morality is thrown out the window. The problem is that sexual appeal used as a marketing tool seems to be showing up more often with a broader range of products and audiences. All too often sexually explicit ads appear in magazines such as YM, Teen, Self, Glamour, Seventeen, and Cosmopolitan, all of which bewilder a target audience of 11-17 year olds who have not yet developed adequate defenses against sexually expli... ...p 19 process 2001. Media †Gaga and Audience Study Essay

Lady Gaga is beyond just a modern come to the fore star she is a wargon as considerably. From literally selling singles, albums and plan tickets, Lady Gaga is overly selling herself as a marking. She is a media construct who is artificial and created for a pickicular manoeuvre audience in the effort for the maximum commercial gain. Her Little Monsters atomic number 18 the obtainers in the crossway and obtainr relationship and they not only buy into the idea of her as an artist but similarly as an icon and a brand. Her brand and im epoch is attained in several ways through and through her design including how she portrays herself as a modern break through pile and her personality. She spreads awareness of herself through market and promotional material including amicable media and euphony videos in order to stay fresh a convincing relationship to her fans. at that place are three main(prenominal) parties involved with this relationship Gaga has with her fans. Fir st of all, her record label, Interscope who signed her in 2007 are part of a conglomerate, Universal Music and so they have identified her as a way to make a financial return on their investment and look to benefit from this relationship financially. Secondly, Lady Gaga is other troupe in this relationship. She also convertiblely benefits financially as intimately as being able to live her dream and passion of medicament or at least that is hat she is trying to portray. Lastly, her Little Monsters are the run short party involved. Made up predominately of teenagers to mid 30s and also the gay community, they benefit from contributing to her success and ultimately finding joy and happiness from this. The main aim of the relationship is to maximise the commercial success from increasing sales of her physical products. Her design is a way in which Lady Gaga endeavours to establish and maintain a relationship with her audience. Two main aspects of her design include how she is a mo dern pop package and her personality while others include her look, ghostlike cult figure and her name. A modern pop package refers to how Gaga produces music within the pop bracket but also how she follows international and acquitical anaesthetic trends in terms of fashion or technology. This is an effective way for Gaga to create the relationship with her audience because of several benefits of a modern pop package. Firstly, pop music reaches out to a large audience not only on Top 40 music stations but in mainstream media in general. As a result there is an increase in appeal from a wider audience allowing the relationship to occur on a wider scale. Secondly, because the target age demographic for pop music would be the 15-35 age group and they have the most income available to spend on entertainment, she is able to maximise sales hence financial return for herself and her record label. In general pop music refers to music that deals with typical topics like love or fame or hav ing fun. Gagas debut single, Just Dance is an representative of her work to show how she fits into this genre of music. It speaks about being free, having a good time reinforcing this idea that pop music is usually made for listening ple asure as opposed to real craft or message sending and Just Dance certainly fits into the category. An increasing part of a modern pop package is appealing genuine and authentic to their fans and ensuring them that the relationship is genuine. Personality is another aspect of her design that enables Gaga to have a relationship with her fans. Her personality refers to her portrayal of herself to be genuine and that she really cares about her fans. The way in which she advocates difference is a main method in which she does this. This allows her to arrest the relationship because by making individuals aspect included and master(prenominal), fans then feel that they need to repay her by giving her unconditional support. Examples of this would be at her concert in Auckland where she sings Happy Birthday to one of her fans, Minisha. She took the effort to l pull the correct pronunciation of her name and this shows the audience how she really cares about them individually.Another example would be when Gaga ask the girls, How short are your skirts? This again allows hr to develop the relationship by making her fans believe that she is genuine and polar from other pop stars and they consequently buy into the idea of how she the perfect pop star and role model that they should support. Her design comes with several implications. Firstly, there are contrary messages from Gaga as a result of being in the modern pop bracket. While she preaches difference and the positive of being unique and different, she herself produces modern pop music. This causes a contradiction in her image and raises the idea that difference is okay if youre still in the main bracket or if Lady Gaga says so. Another example of where this had occurred would be whe n a source quoted that Gaga slams Adele all the time, even calling her a fat cow. Adele is a modern day artist that literally promotes difference, as she is evidently larger than most other pop stars today. This may raise the idea that Gaga is becoming threatening by Adele imputable to the affinity in advocating difference and may be what is developing into commercial envy.Overall this implication is reflecting on Gagas fans because it shows that even though she advocates difference, it really doesnt mean huge difference, just enough to appear different with the aim of financially capitalising on this idea. The way in which is advocating different also raises an implication on the music manufacturing as a whole. It is a well known fact that unless an artist is expected to make property for the record label, they wont be signed. This raises how they have formulas, which have proved successful in the past, and therefore how Gaga must fit into this formula This is further implication s on the music industry as a whole as well. Because Gagas success has proven that the formula works, more and more acts are conforming to this idea of utilising a brand image of appearing different for commercial success. Another example would be One Direction. Similar to Gaga, they are also a product in the way that they are in the business of selling not only their music but also her image with a consumer driven formula. They claim to be different from boybands past but it is evident they have the same boy band pop music with a human driven personality similar to the likes of Backstreet Boys etc. This shows how modern day music is about trivial differences that are clearly not that much different and as long as management companies portray the image of the likes of Gaga and One Direction that they are different then the fans will believe it despite them all following the same money making formula that is truly tested throughout the years. The use of this formula raises the issue o f longevity. When there is an increase in the use of the difference idea, there becomes a slight problem of repetition. If too many stars consistently advocate difference then in comparison the idea of difference doesnt become as ground breaking and instead the new normal. Consequently, the press and also her audience may become bored of this idea of difference preeminent to a twilight in popularity. As well as this, it again raises what the future may hold for the music industry. If teenagers are growing up yearning to be different yet the same as their idols it shows that how in the future we may e moving to an even more on sided one dimension celebrity socialization where everyone is essentially the same yet trivially different to everyone else. Examples can be seen through the latest artists created through the X Factor USA oddly in the Girls category. Similarities have been spotted among Cece Frey and Ke$ha. The way in which she is creating an animal branding to herself is i ncredibly similar to Ke$ha when she first began. This creates the allusion that Cece is different to her counterparts where in fact she is not as she still sings mainstream music.Gaga is known to be one of the acts to lead the way in this brand and cult establishment for fans and since her success, the X Factor is one of the singing talent shows which have followed her in doing the same thing to their contestants. A contestant with a sob story is more presumable to do better than say a contestant with a quality voice. By having a story behind them, contestants can engage with their audiences and manipulate their emotions leading to them becoming more relatable to their audience. This raises how the music industry has become less about the music and rather the personality attached to it showing how it has evolved. A whole package is what budding artists need to be rather than just having the voice and in the future, people with real talent will be less represented. * Marketing and pr omotion is a way in which Lady Gaga spreads awareness of her design to establish and maintain the relationship she had with her fans. She achieves this in two main ways including social media and music videos, other ways are concerts, publicity stunts, merchandise and albums.Firstly modern day pop stars because of its accessibility and also how it allows direct contact between celebrities and their fans use social media widely. Twitter is a medium, which Gaga uses frequently. She was the first user to reach 10 million followers in May 2010 and had consistently been the top most viewed profile on the website. Despite sending on average 2 tweets a day, Goodnight little monsters is an example of a tweet which enables her to maintain this important relationship she had with her fans. Tweets like this make her fans believe they are part of her life and also that she cares about them.Consequently, fans feel special and buy into the idea of supporting her. Now, especially with the feature of Twitter with the ability to send tweets straight to mobile phones, a close bond between her and her fans is established because it makes them believe she is talking to the specially. As well as Twitter, her website is a way in which she targets her fanbase alone. It is by invite only, which is significant because it makes fans feel part of her inner circle and therefore increasing the closeness fans feel of the relationship. Also because she targets those who are different and on the fringe of companionship, and therefore presumed to be not included, by including them she is making sure that they feel included. She plays on the insecurity in everyone in that we have a desire to be included and therefore develops the idea she cares for the genuinely and in return should support her. Music videos are another way Gaga develops a relationship with her fans. Her music video for Telephone is a great example. 9 minutes in length, it had multiple occasions of product localization such a s Wonder White Bread or HP Computers. Both of these features increase the views of her video and therefore awareness of her because it is different. The more views a music video has the more likely it will appear as a promoted video. This attracts more people that are not necessarily in her fanbase already and allows for more people to become her fans. Particularly the product placement, which turns her video into a game where people spot the different brands, views and awareness, is definitely achieved. Though product placement has a direct link to a profit motive, it also helps Gaga to develop a relationship with her fans.By promoting certain brands, her fans are more wedded to purchase them as they feel if they do they are better fans or similar to Gaga as they consume and like the same products. Meanwhile, those companies as well as Gaga are further benefiting financially from it. As well as that because her music videos are usually released to her website first rather than the likes of MTV. She is further up(a) the relationship because she is showing them that she really cares about them and is therefore rewarding their support with any(prenominal)thing tangible before the rest of the world. There are again several implications from her trade and promotion. Firstly, the idea of social media pacing the way for a false relationship between idols and their fans has its own implication. The idea that an idol will reply to your tweets can be likened to a carrot analogy. The accessibility of social networking sites makes fans believe that one day they will notice them, if not today then tomorrow or the succeeding(prenominal) day. This creates a false perception of the relationship fans have with Gaga. In the meantime, by using social networking sites they are freely promoting Gaga as a brand and as a product. Therefore it shows how Gaga is the one benefiting form the use of social networking financially where as the fans are being taken advantage of due to th eir free publicity for her. What used to be the job of management companies and what they had to pay thousands for in the past can now be done for free by her fans. Additionally, social media fosters the idea that pop stars are working for them. This is because when artists leak things like album artwork, or snippets of new songs, they automatically get feedback on social networking sites without presently asking for it and make changes accordingly. As a result, fans believe that their artist work to please them and because they are so wrapped up in the idea of them they discount the real purpose behind the changes which is to increase sales and financial return for her record label and herself leading to manipulation of the trust between Gaga and her fans. new(prenominal) pop acts such as Justin Bieber and One Direction use them in similar ways. Furthermore, there are social worries attached to this use of social media. There is a distortion of the idea that teenagers actually ha ve this connection with their idols where in fact they havent. There then becomes a dependency of them on their idols with some fans even going as far as saying Gaga saved my life or similar claims. This is an issue due to the impacts this could have on them if their idol was to not be in the industry anymore. Besides other artists utilising social media for promotion and marketing of themselves, businesses have also followed Gaga in this way. sizeable businesses in New Zealand from banks such as ASB with 6300 followers to Vodafone with over 23 and a half thousand followers are beginning to capitalise on the use of social media for business also.E-commerce has become a huge part of business and more and more companies are aiming to create the relationship with their audience and target markets through these social media outlets in the effort to become more relatable and ultimately earn more sales from it. A issue becomes prominent as society becomes too over exposed to commercialisa tion and it becomes less about the product itself but how its sold to us sways whether we purchase it or not. Music videos also have their own implications. As said in an article by Jezbel. com, If anything, he video simply amplifies what music videos have been all along a giant commercial for an artist to sell records with and this is more than true with Gaga but as well as selling music, music videos are also helping he sell concert tickets. Concerts are where the majority of the money is made in the modern industry due to the increase in piracy. Consequently, her music videos become promotion to her concerts and activitely act as a preview of what you can expect from her concert. An example would be the costume changes throughout her video for environ. She changes from a telephone headpiece to a leopard print leotard. The multiple costume changes not only put into practice what she preaches but it becomes a preview of what fans can expect from her concerts which is exuberant cost ume changes. This ultimately shows how the more physical products music artists make, the more they are just trying to increase their sales of other things in the effort to earn more money from their fans. The same conclusion could then be drawn from the latest thing of having lyric videos for singles could just be an encouragement for fans to purchase something else to increase the commercial success for artists and their labels. This raises a more significant implication of how more and more mediums are being created for fans to buy into and the impulsive buying from fans are further increasing the profits made from Gaga as a brand. Fans tend to buy merchandise and anything with their idols on them in the effort to prove they are the biggest fans and again like music, they are tangible things in which artists sell and no doubt contributed to Gagas $90 million dollar profit last year (according to Forbes).

Catharine Beecher and Charlotte Perkins Essay

In the article Catharine Beecher and Charlotte Perkins Gilman Architects of Female Power by author Valerie Gill, Ms. Gill attempts to bridge the gap between what appears to be two powerful women of their time with two totally diametrical judicial decisions of the American woman and the type of life they should lead. The author points out the obvious differences of opinions in the writings of the two women, who are related by the way, and the different era in which they write. Catharine Beecher was the great auntie of Charlotte Perkins Gilman and lived and wrote during a time when a woman functional in any other place besides the folk was not something that happened often. A womans job during this time was to raise children and make the home a warm, inviting space that had functionality that would allow for separate spheres for the men and women, allowing the men to have a place to discuss outside ventures and women to have a place to convey with domestic matters.Charlotte Perk ins Gilman on the other hand, lived during a period where productivity was happening in factories all over the country. Her feminist attempt to undo her great aunts idea that women should be assigned to only the home made it appear that the two women had absolutely nothing in third estate when it came to the ideas on how women should be viewed socially. Gill points out how the two very different opinions rattling have many things in common. Both women agree that the role of women is very of the essence(p) to the health of society, even though they disagree on what their roles should be. By suggesting that each writer knows what is the best arrangement for women to experience shows another similarity between the two writers. As pointed out by Gill, Both writers conceptualize the identity of women in spatial as well as socioeconomic terms, assuming that the fulfillment of their own get off can be quite literally mapped out. The author makes a point that even though their opinions of what is ideal are very different, the idea that there is one way to make women live a full life is exactly the same. Both women also had the common conclusion that the womans place, whether it is in the home working or in the factory working, would make a great impact on the society. Architectural ideas as to better society are another thing these two authors had in common, as pointed out by Gill in the article. The elder author Beecher would make drawings in her articles about represent the home and using dividers as a way to make more areas in the home, and Gilman, being concerned about the lives led by farmers wives, included drawings of a farming community shaped like a pie that had common areas to share, as to make life easier for them.Interesting enough, Gill included in her article a picture of a drawing done by Beecher, along with her sister Harriet Beecher Stowe, later in life of a block of houses with common areas used to house the homeless, helpless, and vicious which very much resembled Gilmans block community idea where people shared common spaces and so that some women could place care of the children and household duties while others went out in the community to work. This is an excellent example of Beecher thinking like Gilman in the mixing of public and private space. It is my opinion that the aging Beecher was beginning to think out of the box. This article was insightful and gave a great example of how people with a difference of opinion can actually be thinking the same. If one just read the two womens writings without an establish mind, one would think they were completely different and had totally different ideas. Valerie Gill allowed the reader of the article to view a situation such as this one in a different way and to keep an open mind and read between the lines of any writings. I would have liked to have seen her go on and discuss the idea that some women may fail at home and some may belong in the workforce. I believe that eve ry woman has a different situation to consider and what is important to one woman may not be important to another.

Many Epic Heroes Struggle to Return Home

The following essay is a comparison analysis of the circumstances of the exile and return of the main characters from The Odyssey, propagation 4 and Ramayana. The three men differ in motivation but are all led by a spiritual power.Odysseus is a labyrinthian main character. The king is not but a brave, intelligent warrior who is highly respected by the gods and mortals, but he has obvious negative qualities making it unvoiced at times for the reader to sympathize with him.Odysseus complex character and poor judgment causes him to partake in dangerous adventures prolonging his return. One example is when he sails to Ismarus and battles the Cicones. erst chased back to sea Odysseus arrogantly announced his name to Polyphemus as he sailed away. This announcement creates another battle for his life once Polyphemus identifies Odysseus as the man who took his sight to his father Poseidon and a plan for revenge on Odysseus is made.Odysseus did not however have to establish himself as a gun. He was considered a hero onwards leaving for Troy. It was not the desire to be a hero that drove him to his many adventures and battles it was victory which motivated Odysseus.Cain, unlike Odysseus, is not perceived as a hero. He is responsible for his fate of exile when he takes the life of his brother and lies about the murder to paragon. Cain is not considered noble or heroic for his choices in life. In contrast, in Ramayana, Rama can be perceived as a noble man. Rama does not question his fathers order of banishment. Rama lives according to his Dharma, which is unornamented through his actions. An example of his noble actions is when his step-brother Bharata finds out about his mothers sinister acts which led to Ramas banishment and Bharata becoming king. When Bharata approaches Rama in the woods, Rama refuses to go back to the kingdom and rubric his rightful thrown, because it would be against his fathers orders. Odysseus while heroic would not be considered noble be cause of his deceitful and selfish ways. Self-righteousness, thievery and dishonesty caused Odysseus to continuously soak up in dangerous adventures. Rama was not flawed in character and did not put himself or his companions in harms way due to selfish behavior he was an honest and selfless man.The return of both Odysseus and Rama are similar unlike their exile. Both men return to their kingdom to successfully carry out their rule. Their recurrence differs however Odysseus returns with vengeance, asserting his authority killing the suitors who had caused so much grief in his absence. Odysseus exile and return are influenced heavily by the gods. Once reunited with his father, the suitors families go down for revenge. It is only with the influence of Athena that civil war does not break out. Ramas return is a more joyous and celebrated return. He returns to begin the rightful king and has a successful rule, where the people of his kingdom are very pleased. All three stories, Ramaya na, The Odyssey and Genesis 4 involve divine encumbrance and spiritual influence. The lives of the three main characters, Odysseus, Rama and Cain are influenced by a higher power. The gods are heavily involved in the events taken place in The Odyssey particularly Athena. Rama lives his life before, during and by and by exile according to his Dharma and Cain is in a spiritual exile from God and prosperity.Selfishness and deceitfulness are similar characteristics in both Cain and Odysseus. Cain lies to God when asked of the whereabouts of his brother. Odysseus lies continuously throughout The Odyssey. Both men are responsible for their exile, with the exception of Odysseus original reason for leaving his kingdom the war in Troy. Rama is not responsible for his exile however it is his step-mother who demands his banishment. All three men struggle to return to their phratrys. Odysseus struggle is primarily physical he has many battles to be won before returning home. His character do es not, for the most part, grow emotionally. Rama, while following his Dharma, struggles emotionally with the disappearance of Sita and does have some physical battles with the rakshasas during his exile. Cains struggle is spiritual after being exiled by God, he is forced to live destitute, with barren land and without Gods grace. In conclusion, Odysseus, Cain and Rama all differ in character it is only Rama that continues to act righteously during exile while the other two men act in self-righteousness causing their predicaments. They all however seek to be home Odysseus and Rama seek their kingdoms and Cain seeks the good graces of God.ReferencesMack, M., Knox, B., McGalliard, J.C., Pasinetti, P.M., Hugo, H.E., Spacks, P.M., Wellek, R., Douglas, K. and Lawall, S. Outcasts United: A True Story about Soccer and Immigration Made for Hollywood Essay

Rhetorical Analysis of pariahs United A True Story close(predicate) Soccer and Immigration do for Hollywood? Pitch Invasion journalist, Andrew client, writes the member Outcasts United A True Story virtually Soccer and Immigration Made for Hollywood from a sarcastic viewpoint. Guest starts by allowing his reader to get acquainted with Warren St. Johns cover article on Outcast United, which later became a take hold.He introduces the awestruck fact that Universal Studios wants to pay St. John and his main character, Luma Mufleh, $3 million to create a corresponding film to Outcasts United. Guest then debates the question of why youth soccer supplications to Hollywood so much. He is concerned that their story will not be as serious, nor will it offer unity and enmity just as the original story did. Guests second worry is that St. Johns book version is nothing but a work of heartfelt journalism, instead of what he thought would be more lighthearted (par. 5). Andrew Guest does no t variant on ethos and there is very little logos, but does formulate his opinions through pathos, devise choice, and annotation.Guest wants to lure the audience whom has read Outcasts United An American Town, a Refugee Team and that be familiar with it. He uses strong pathos to persuade the readers more closely. For example, Guest says, But I was also worried that the real appeal here was the kind heartwarming pabulum so often associated with the popular sports media (par. 2). He wants the reader to feel that Hollywoods intentions may not be what they are expecting just as well as he does. Furthermore, he explains that the story answered his questions but did not stop his worrying.Guest also uses pathos in his repetition of heartwarming (par. 7) to reveal how the truth would really be portrayed by Hollywood. A cliche, such as this, would make the readers question whether Hollywood is ingenuous in what they are trying to do. Another strategy Guest uses to strengthen his stand p oint is his unique word choice. The way he catches the readers eyes and ears is by articulating his thoughts into strong opinions. He accomplishes this by explaining, The game distracts people just enough that they are willing to reveal things about their inner lives and thoughts that they capacity not reveal over a cup of coffee (par. ).His opinion makes the audience see that sports alone causes people to be more vocal about things they never thought they could actually say. Guest then uses the word pabulum to create a bolder statement in his argument that Hollywoods intentions are only to nourish sports media in a way that would make society more sympathetic to the stories. In addition, Guest uses a vivid sarcastic tone in his article when referring to Outcast United. This tone is to exemplify how heartwarming continues to define soccer and the way it is socially connected with the popular sports media today. He supports this by sardonically stating, look, world peace really is possible if we just learn the life lessons soccer has to teach us (par. 2). However, Guest really feels that soccer only makes a difference to a certain extent. Guest goes on to say that it always surprises him when someone claims that soccer is a great force that draws people together. He acts as if he is in shock, when in reality he does not agree with that universal view. In fact he swears the complete opposite. His sarcastic tone weakens the article because sometimes that is the opposite of what the reader is looking for.Although Guest supports his appeals and gets his points across to the reader, he does not build much credibility as an expert on the subject. there was no ethos found throughout the article. Guests career is partially understood, and is not fully elaborated upon. He speaks on sports, Hollywood, and society throughout the article. However, Guest is not a sports fan, and this he supports by bluntly stating, And while I dont actually think of myself as a particul arly obsessive sports fan or certainly not as a sports writer (par. 6). He is not a movie critic or socialist of the matter. He makes a great debater, but what has he shown about his personally? Has he played any sports? Why should one agree with what he believes, and not what they believe? Credibility is what increases the effectiveness of the article, not opinion alone. Andrew Guest succeeds in telling his readers his viewpoints on this book and on his social beliefs. He uses strong pathos, bold word choice, and a firm tone. He has built on little ethos and logos, which causes his article to be less effective. Guest career is never states throughout the article about his career or supports any of his opinionated arguments.

Learning Theories Essay

Lev Vygotsky, born in the U. S. S. R. in 1896, is responsible for the social outgrowth theory of learning. He proposed that social interaction profoundly influences cognitive development. Vygotskys get wind point is his belief that biological and ethnic development do not occur in isolation. Vygotsky approached development differently from Piaget. Piaget believed that cognitive development consists of four main(prenominal) periods of cognitive growth sensory motor, preoperational, concrete operations, and formal operations.Piagets theory suggests that development has an endpoint in goal. Vygotsky, in contrast, believed that development is a process that should be analyzed, instead of a product to be obtained. Marcy P. Driscoll stated (as cited in Riddle, 1999) that Vygotsky believes the development process that begins at birth and continues until death is too complex to be defined by stages. The major theme of Vygotskys theoretical framework is that social interaction plays a fu ndamental role in the development of cognition.Vygoysky states Every thing in the childs cultural development appears twice first, on the social take, and later, on the individual level first between people (interpsychological) and thus inside the child (intrapsychological) (Funderstanding, 2001). This applies equally to voluntary attention, to logical memory, and to formation of concepts. All the higher functions originate as actual relationships between individuals.A second scene of Vygotskys theory is the idea that the potential for cognitive development is limited to a certain time span that he calls the zone of proximal development (ZPD). Vygotsky believed that this life long process of development was dependent on social interaction and that social learning actually leads to cognitive development (Kearsley, 1998). Vygotsky describes it as the outmatch between the actual development level as impelled by independent chore solving and the level of potential development as determined throughLearning Theories 3 problem solving under adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers (Funderstanding, 2001). In early(a) words, a student can perform a task under adult guidance or with peer collaboration that could not be achieved alone. The district of Proximal Development bridges the gap between what is k straight offn and what can be known. Vygotsky claimed that learning occurred in this zone. Therefore, Vygotsky focused on the connections between people and the cultural context in which they act and interact in shared experiences. gibe to Vygotsky, humans use tools that develop from a culture, such as dustup and writing, to intermediate their social environments. Initially, Children develop these tools to serve solely as social functions, ways to communicate needs. Vygotsky believed that the internalization of these tools led to higher thinking skills (Riddle, 1999). When Piaget observed young children participate in egocentric speech in t heir preoperational stage, he believed it was a phase that disappeared once the child r to each oneed the stage of concrete operations.Driscoll states (as cited in Riddle, 1999) in contrast, Vygotsky viewed this egocentric speech as a transition from social speech to internalized thought. Thus, Vygotsky believed that thought and language could not exist without each separate. Vygotskys theory was an attempt to justify consciousness as the end product of socialization. For example, in the learning of language, our first vocal noises with friends or adults are for the purpose of communication, but once mastered they extend internalized and allow inner speech.Traditionally, schools have not promoted environments in which the students play an active role in their education and in the education of their friends. Vygotskys theory, however, requires the instructor and students to play untraditional roles as they collaborate with each other. Instead of a instructor dictating the lesson s to students and later evaluate them, a teacher should collaborate with her students in indian lodge to create meaningful ways that students can make their own evaluation. Learning then becomes a reciprocatory experience for the students and the teacher. Learning Theories 4.The physical classroom, based on Vygotskys theory, would provide clustered desks or tables and work space for peer instruction, collaboration, and small group instruction. Like the environment, the instructional design of material would be integrated to promote and encourage student interaction and collaboration. Thus, the classroom becomes a community of learning. Because Vygotsky asserts that cognitive change occurs within the Zone of Proximal development, instruction would be designed to reach a developmental level that is just above the students current developmental level.Vygotsky proclaims, learning which is oriented toward developmental levels that have already been reached is ineffective from the view point of the childs overall development. It does not aim for a new stage of the developmental process, but rather lags piece of tail this process (Social Development, 1996). Appropriation is necessary for cognitive development within the zone of proximal development. Individuals participating in peer collaboration or guided teacher instruction must share the same focus in order to access the zone. Samuel J.Hausfather states (as cited in Riddle, 1999), joint attention and shared problem solving is requisite to create a process of cognitive, social, and emotional interchange. Furthermore, it is essential that the partners be on different developmental levels. In addition, the partner that is on the higher level needs to be aware of his partners lower level. If this does not occur, or if one partner continually dominates, the interaction is less successful. Scaffolding and reciprocal teaching are effective strategies to access the zone.Scaffolding requires the teacher to provide stud ents the opportunity to extend the current skills and knowledge. Hausfather reports (as cited in Riddle, 1999) the teacher must engage students interests, modify tasks so they are manageable, and motivate students to pursue the instructional goal. In addition, the teacher must look for discrepancies between students efforts and the solution, control for frustration and risk, and model an idealized discrepancy of the act. Learning Theories 5 Reciprocal teaching allows for the creation of a dialogue between students and teachers. This two-way communication becomes an instructional strategy by advance students to go beyond answering and discussing questions. A study (as cited in Riddle, 1999) demonstrated the Vygotskian approach with reciprocal teaching methods in their successful program to teach interpreting strategies. The teacher and students alternated turns leading small group discussions on reading. After modeling four reading strategies, students began to assume the teaching role. Results of this study showed significant gains over other instructional strategies.Cognitively Guided Instruction is another strategy to implement Vygotskys theory. This strategy involves the teacher and students exploring math problems and then sharing their different problem solving strategies in an open dialogue (Riddle, 1999). Vygotskys social development theory challenges traditional teaching methods. Historically, schools have been organized around recitation teaching. According to Hausfather, (as cited in Riddle, 1999) the teacher disseminates knowledge to be memorized by the students, who in turn, recite the information back to the teacher. However, the studies described above offer empirical demonstrate that learning, based on the social development theory, facilitates cognitive development over other instructional strategies (Riddle, 1999). School structure does not reflect the rapid changes that hunting lodge is experiencing. Opportunities for social interaction h ave greatly increased with the introduction and integration of computer applied science. Therefore, the social context for learning is transforming as well.Learning relationships can now be formed from distances through cyberspace, whereas collaboration and peer instruction was once only possible in shared physical space (Bacalarski, 1994). Computer technology is a cultural tool that students can use to mediate and internalize their learning. According to Kathryn Crawford (as cited in Riddle, 1999) recent research suggest changing the Learning Theories 6 learning contexts with technology is a powerful learning activity. If schools continue to resist structural change, students will not be as prepared as they should be for the world.Lev Vygotsky lived during the Russian Revolution, a time of great change in his culture. His theory was that biological and cognitive development does not happen apart from each other. These two developments sustain and grow from each other. This is when learning takes place. Because of this theory, his environment of change was a great influence in his own cognitive processes. Learning Theories 7 References Bacalarski, M. C. , (1994). Extended Family Vs Nuclear Families Essay

I remember having a carefree and joyful childhood among several uncles, aunts, grand parents and parents. I remember the playful times that lasted for days at a stretch with my cousins. There was always one of the several older cousins ready to help me with my studies and the homework. dinner party time was a noisy and delightful occasion where a big group of us would enjoy anything being served. Bed time meant wonderful stories told by grandfather or grandmother Having been born in an increase family in Vietnam, I had a very pleasant childhood. But of course there were rough not so good times too for instance when a big box of chocolates still meant only one each . Our parents would not sully anything and everything that we asked for, as it meant that the other children would be dissatisfied. A new set of garment , however strongly desired, would be purchased only for a special occasion or a festival. Getting a toy meant having to share it too From such an increase family, we h ad to move out of the country as my fathers trading required it to be so.We had to literally break away(p) from the family bonds and set up a nuclear ( broken part of the ) family in a far away country. Initially we found ourselves lost. We had no elders to whom we could turn to for our guidance. The wisdom and experience of the family elders which was so easily and freely available earlier was not to be found. Parents were busy nerve-wracking to make decisions and make us more comfortable. Every small issue seemed to a big hurdle to tide over.Slowly we got used to this life sprint and started enjoying its advantages. A requests to parents for a new toy or a box of chocolates or a new dress would be met almost immediately. Sharing of chocolates and goodies was on a much lower key We started gloating in the undue attention of our parents. But as we grew up we found that the bonding in the extended family was not there and we had to constantly make an effort to keep the family to gether. We became little adjusting and more independent.Tolerance was conspicuous by its absence Both my parents and we the children, were becoming less patient and living in a big group slowly started becoming very difficult. Our individualistic thinking gave us some predominance in the society and our mortalal achievements remained so . We had freedom from the traditions which were strictly followed in the joint family. But it also meant that festivities were listless days with lots of good food and clothes and nothing to celebrate. The gaiety was missing on such occasions. We got our individual identities but lost a part of ourselves back home. So as a person who has seen both sides of the grass, I strongly am inclined to the advantages of a joint family. It nurtures a person into a wholesome and one who is capable of caring and sharing. The dearest and respect shown towards all the other members of the family seemed to be too vague to imagine. The nuclear family was a bonding only between the parents and their children. Despite some distinct disadvantages the extended family would be my choice any day and in any place.

The Tattooed Soldier

October 29, 2012 The Tattooed spend This book showed us many injustices in the United States and in Guatemala. We learn many things chance in each country that let us externalise how daily tone is in these countries. In Guatemala we see the army killing innocent people. No one is golosh in Guatemala especially in the capital. We see that those who are fighting against the army to gain justice are targeted. These people are fighting for the rights they merit and instead of being heard they are getting killed. Most try to run away to be expert but they are soon found and killed. We see this happening to Antonio and Elena in the story. They move to San Cristobal to be safe but soon they are found and Elena is killed along with her son. In the United States we see different injustices happening in Los Angeles. We catch out that the LA riots are about to begin. They inform us briefly the raw beating of Rodney King. The police are no longer respected and many gangs are shooting h aphazard people including children. These gangs are marking their territory by tagging and anyone who tries to take over is killed. We see how unfair life is to the homeless and more specifically with immigrants. The government does not protect homeless people and they are leftfield alone to die. Since undocumented people cant get welfare they are forced to find other ways to get money. Undocumented people cannot get help from the government either so when they get robbed, raped, or beat they cannot go to the authorities. Along with these injustices there many others that are unfair to people.

Jacob Marley was his partner in life, and even though their relationship was for business only, he was boors only friend. In rue from his own life, Marley and the Three Ghosts of Christmas change grumps attitude towards life.Jacob Marley was much same Scrooge in his life. He also was cold hearted and only cared about notes. In his death, he learnt that it was too late for him to change, however he wanted to give Scrooge the opportunity to die a better person. Marley came to Scrooge to deter him about how he regretted non inspection and repair oneselfing people or being kind. Marley now wanted to help people in life, but he wore the ch ain (he) forged in life. Marleys higgle startled Scrooge, but he pacify brushed off the warning and thought that Marley was a dream.Jacob Marley decline not doing all the things he could have in life, but Scrooge is yet to realise why he needs to change. The scratch line tad that is sent by Marley is the ghost of Christmas past. The ghost takes Scrooge put up in time to where Scrooge was born and raised. At the sight of the village, Scrooge softens and is excited for a effect before returning to his old personality. A change is shown at this point because Scrooge reflects on the wide-cut past life he had. Scrooge is shown a scene from when he was a boy, left simply at Christmas whilst everyone else was celebrating. It shows how Scrooge is imagining friends because he is so lonely. After seeing himself Scrooge he regrets not paying attention to the people hes seen celebrating Christmas. There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door expire night, I would have liked to have given him something, thats all. This shows that even though Scrooge hasnt realized that he is changing, he is starting to become more aware of the things hes done wrong, and of the community. Scrooge is then shown the time when he was an apprentice, below the employment of Mr. Fezziwig.Fezziwig was a jolly old man, who always respected his workers and cared for them, unlike Scrooge. This scene gives Scrooge the lesson to be kinder to his apprentice Bob Cratchit. The ghost shows Scrooge the annual Christmas parties that Fezziwig held, where rooms were filled with laughter and joy, reminding Scrooge that he had a fun and joyous life in the past. The happiness (he) gives, is quite as great as if it cost a fortune. The ghost of Christmas Past changes Scrooge by making him aware of his past life, and the unselfishness he once showed.Scrooge is visited by a second spirit, the ghost of Christmas present. The Ghost first states that If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future, the child forget die. Scrooge reflects back to his past cutting comments towards two charitable solicitors against him. Scrooge suggests had better do it, and decrease the surplus population (about the poor children of London), Scrooge is disgusted at his own words and is concerned for Tiny Tim and his family. Bob Cratchit and his family all gather round and make a toast to scrooge, even though they know he is disrespectful and the ogre of the family, they still thank Scrooge. The guests of Scrooges nephew, Fred, also toast to Scrooge despite his cruelty. The ghost of Christmas Present, changes Scrooge by making him feel obliged to help the poor of London, and the ghost makes him aware of what people think of him. The last and the most fearsome of the phantoms visit Scrooge, the ghost of Christmas yet to come. He takes Scrooge to the future to show Scrooge what happens after Scrooges death. People question what happened to the deceased Scrooge, but most of the people goggle and dont have any interest in what happened. They are interested in his money and possessions. He was alone by himself. This shows that when Scrooge dies he will not be missed and people will not have a care or interest. Three wealthy men remark that his funeral will be cheap, if anyone comes at all. He is taken to his house where a poor family is stealing belongings, and an unmasked come in lies on the bed. The ghost starts unmasking the figure but Scrooge tells him to stop, as he fears the figure is him. The ghost takes him to the graveyard where his neglected grave lay. With a connection to death, Scrooge is taken to the Cratchits home where the melody is sad and depressing. The family is all upset over the passing of Tiny Tim. Scrooge wishes he was able to help Bob Cratchit more by raising his money to provide the right treatment for Tiny Tim. Scrooge vows to change and help people for the better. The three ghosts and Jacob Marley, change Scrooge for the better. Their visits made Scrooge aware of his wrong-doing. They showed him what others were like in good spirits, and what would happen in the future if he didnt change. Scrooge realized how he could change and he was better than his word. The ghosts made Scrooge a better person.

Chinese culture Essay

William Faulkner once tell that The past is not dead. In fact, its not regular past and he could have oratory about the hi humbug of porcelain painting in china. The history of this ancient art lives and breathes in every porcelain carapace we touch and eat off of. It lives and breathes in the humbled villages in China which cling to the past as much as they want to move into the future. We reach the beautiful of city of Yi-xing in the early morning hours. Early enough that the streets were empty and the sun was just peaking by dint of the rows and rows of teatime leaves. The blend of organic greenness and sandy orange reminded me of the beaches of California I had visited at a child. The city of Yi-ing is the home of several tea plantations which stretch as far as the eye can regulate. During the day the rows of teas are cluttered with the social movement of severals humans which look out of place in the purely green surroundings. If you head south through the beautiful m ountains, which look more like hills to me, you reach a deep and clear lake. This lake, Lake Taihu, is where Lu Yu once lived when he wrote his now infamous book about the magic of tea and its role in Chinese culture.Tea porcelain are intimately linked in Chinese culture. Each competing with the other to see which is older and more valued. Upon a close examination of the history it is hard to separate the two. The Chinese Porcelain pulverization sits on the far edge of the city of Yi-ing and is a striking contrast to the hills and valleys that lay in face up of it and beyond it. It is interesting to see the coupling of industrialization and farming in a country which in some places seems oddly untouched by civilization and in other devastated by the pollution from manufacturers and cars. The story of Chinese Porcelain is one of perseverance and beyond that of innovation. Chinese ceramic and porcelain reveal the resourcefulness of Chinese artisans. They debate in their instalments , which are found enclosed in glass in the lobby area of the factory, how they employ the materials that they had and turned them into pieces of pottery that have with stood the test of time. In the Yuan and Mind dynasties, Chinese porcelain applyrs combined porcelain stone with kaolin however kaolin was extremely hard to work with.It was then that Chinese porcelain makers discovered that if you drop anchor kaolin and then added water a malleable substance was created with could be kneaded into porcelain stone. This could easily be organize into pots and vases on the potters wheel. During the drying processes a knife is used to slice excess porcelain from the pottery which accounts for the finespun thinness of Chinese Porcelain. To my surprise once we went into the factory the very same techniques were being used.Centuries later ripe Chinese artisans were paying homage to their centuries old mentors by building pottery in the same fashion. The intertwine is that the new pott ery produced in these factories are brightly colored by hand with a small paint brush. The craftsmanship is perfect and the people here, who are obviously under paid and living in less then optimal condition, absolutely enjoy what they do. They take pride in every piece they make and are more then willing to share their skills with you.Our tour guide informed us that many of the kilns in use at the factory were hundreds of years old. Apparently once a elephantine kiln is established it can be used for hundreds of years. The art of preparing clay and the process which follows is a craft which is passed down(a) again and again from generation to generation. This is why visitors can find subtle differences in glazing processes as headspring as firing processes throughout the villages and cities in China. Porcelain is more then just a container used for tea or food stuff. The art displayed on pieces of Chinese Porcelain reveal the entire history of the Chinese people. From myths to fe ars, historic battles and even home comings. Pottery and porcelain pieces exported during these periods are an excellent source of research materials on the history of Chinas communications, trade, and economic relations with other countries. My trip to city of Yi-ing was memorable for several reasons but close importantly I was reminded of the value of craft within a society.I will never immerse the feel of Chinese Porcelain on my fingertips. The knowledge that something that delicate could last for centuries was truly symbolic of the struggle and governmental strife that the Chinese people have dealt with since its birth. Art is not merely for decoration, entertainment, or even functionality. It serves a much more important purpose. Through art we can see the evolution and exploitation of not just a country like China but the spirit and souls of the people who make their homes and keep their families in those counties.

Currency crisis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Currency crisis - Essay ExampleHowever, his faculty member excellence and outstanding performance in various portfolios he has held proves his critics wrong (Blackden 2012). The responsibility of salvaging the United terra firmas currency crisis will be his primary responsibility as the governor of the Central imprecate of England. Blackdens obligate in The Telegraph highlights some of the attributes that objective Carney possess that makes him a good alternative for the position. The article clearly outlines possible ways that economists think Mark Carney would use to restore Britains dwindle down economy. In this way, it has proved and highlighted some of the theories proposed earlier by economists in their attempts to explain the causes and ways of minimizing currency crisis. Mark Carney has been portrayed to believe in closer supervision and maintenance of high capital requirements for large monetary institutions (Blackden 2012). This is opposed to what Sir Mervyn King ad vocates. However, it is worth noting that underdevelopment of the argoting sector can cause a currency crisis. This is because the rudimentary bank may focus on financing the banking sector to bail them from their fiscal problems at the expense of maintaining the stick (Komulainen 1999). This may bring currency instability leading to a currency crisis. ... This is aimed at making the financial system safe as the economy recovery process is being conducted. It is similar to the canonical currency-crisis clay sculpture. This model as proposed by Stephen Salant asserts that speculators have tendencies of holding exhaustible resources with expectations that their prices would rise. The increase in the prices of these resources will then whirl the speculators a return rate equivalent to other assets (Krugman n.d.). In this way, the exchange rates would be stabilized. Therefore, it is demand to comprehend Blackdens assertion on the need for Mark Carney to empower British banks to ho ld broad capital. New-wave theories have also explained that recent currency crises affecting various countries are as a issue of the weak banking systems. Therefore, holding massive capital would imply that the banks can sustain themselves and would not need bailing from the central bank (Fourcans & Franck 2003). In this scenario, the central bank will prevent a possible currency crisis. The article also mention that Mark Carney would urge United Kingdoms leading companies to invest in new markets such as Brazil, China and India. Opening up and venturing into new markets would help Britain a ample deal since it would steer the economy to a fast-paced recovery process (Fourcans & Franck 2003). On the other hand, venturing into unknown and emerging markets would give investors the confidence that the currency is stable thus, they would not withdraw from the British market due(p) to fear of impendent collapse of the economy (Fane 2000). Additionally, Mark Carneys appointment is expected to save UK from the imminent effects of the on-going Euro zone crisis. This is because the United Kingdom depends on foreign money to fund most of its minded(p)
